01: The Challenge

A low roofline ruled out the obvious solutions.

Diana wanted a covered outdoor deck, protection from sun and rain, without giving up the view. The existing roofline made that harder than it sounds.

• A standard attached cover would have sat too low, killing headroom and blocking light
• A freestanding structure would have broken the visual connection to the house
• The Spiced Rum border required a precise layout to align cleanly with the stair returns and skirting
• Materials had to hold up to Sonoma County’s coastal fog, dry summers, and wet winters

The Constraint: Work with the low roofline, not around it, while still delivering a covered space that feels open and intentional.

02: The Process

The right hardware unlocked the whole design.

Farrar Construction solved the roofline problem with Skylift roof riser hardware, a system designed to raise an attached cover above a low eave, creating headroom without disconnecting the structure from the house.

1. Site Assessment: Roofline height, attachment points, and drainage angles measured before any design was committed.
2. Skylift Solution: Roof riser hardware specified to raise the cover above the existing eave and deliver proper headroom.
3. Roof Design: SunTuf corrugated panels on a Redwood frame, weatherproof overhead coverage that still lets natural light filter through.
4. Decking Layout: Havana Gold field boards with a Spiced Rum picture-frame border, aligned to the stair returns and skirting.
5. Permits Handled: All permitting and site prep managed in-house; one point of contact throughout.
6. Final Walkthrough: Every detail was reviewed with Diana before the project was considered complete

03: The Result

Covered, open, and completely at home on the property.
