01. The Challenge
A shape worth keeping.
The concrete patio in Harriss King’s backyard had a curve. Not a small one. A long, deliberate arc that wrapped from the back of the house out into the yard.
Most decks get drawn in rectangles. Most concrete patios with a deck added on top are demoed first. Harriss wanted neither.
The brief was three things at once: keep the curve, run a single material from slab to surface with no contrast band breaking the line, and pick a board that would hold up to the Sonoma sun without turning into a maintenance project.
02. The Process
The patio became the drawing.
Most decks start with a CAD file. Harriss’s started with the slab. Farrar’s team field-measured the concrete arc point by point and translated it straight into the framing layout. The deck’s perimeter would mirror the patio’s perimeter. That was the build.
Trex Lineage Jasper, picked for the curve.
Jasper is a warm mid-brown that holds its color through Sonoma summers and winters, with a heat-mitigating surface that keeps the boards walkable on the hot days. Running it across the deck and the fascia meant the curve would read as a single continuous line, not as a band of trim wrapped around the deck top.
The fascia was where the build got serious.
Composite fascia doesn’t bend on its own. To follow the arc, the Jasper boards were heat-bent on-site, panel by panel, and fitted to the perimeter while still warm enough to take shape. The result is a fascia line that follows the curve as cleanly as the slab below it.
03. The Result
A deck shaped by what was already there.
Three things stand out on the day the project was finished:
- The curve held: the deck perimeter follows the patio arc cleanly from the house all the way to the end of the yard.
- The fascia carries the line: heat-bent Jasper boards wrap the curve continuously, reading as a single sweep rather than a series of segments.
- One material did all the work: decking and fascia both in Trex Lineage Jasper, no break, no contrast, no transition between top and edge.
A deck with one material and one shape can fail badly if the workmanship under it isn’t there. On Harriss’s build, the workmanship is the design. The Jasper holds a quiet, mid-tone warmth through the seasons.
The curve doesn’t try to be the loud thing in the yard; it gives the yard back its line. The slab now has a deck on top of it that appears to have been poured at the same time.
Some decks get built to be looked at. Harriss’s was built to belong.
