01. The Challenge

A deck for the hour after sundown.

Dan didn’t have a daytime problem. He had an evening one.

The yard worked fine at noon. People drifted in, found chairs, and sat under the sun. But the moment the light went out, the deck went with it. The hour Dan had imagined hosting on, soft light after dinner, drinks still on the table, conversation that didn’t want to end, was the hour he never got to use.

The brief came in three pieces: keep the perimeter open so the view stayed in, build the surface for people to gather around, and light the structure from inside so the evening didn’t end with the daylight.

02. The Process

Designed from the inside out.

The bar tops went on the drawing first. They were the social anchors, the places people would land with a drink in hand. Once their positions were set, the cable railing layout followed, kept low and open so anyone leaning on a bar could still see across the yard.

A board that works two shifts

Trex Lineage Biscayne was picked for two reasons. In daylight, Lineage’s heat-mitigating surface keeps the boards cool underfoot. After dark, the lighter Biscayne tone highlights Dekor’s LEDs better than a darker composite would, giving the lighting room to read across the deck rather than be absorbed by it.

Light built into the bones

Dekor was designed into the build, not added at the end. The fixtures were specified during framing, with wiring runs and recessed locations cut into the structure as it went up. Step lights, post lights, and under-rail accents all sit flush with the surrounding wood and composite.

Wood where the hands land

Two placements, both at the points where the deck gets touched. Redwood frames the cable railing on top and bottom, and Redwood forms the bar tops themselves. That puts the wood-grain warmth composite can’t carry exactly where people lean, set down a glass, or run a hand along the rail.

03. The Result

A deck that runs on two clocks.

Dan’s deck reads differently depending on when you visit it. Four things shifted the day the project was finished:

  • At noon, the cable railing disappears: the yard runs visually right up to the deck, the bar tops anchor without crowding, and the Biscayne surface reflects light instead of holding heat.
  • After dark, the Dekor lights take over: step lights guide the staircases, post lights mark the perimeter without flooding it, and under-rail accents trace the deck’s edge into the yard.
  • The bar tops carry the social weight: Redwood at exactly the right height for standing, leaning, setting a drink down, and talking across.
  • Nothing was added later: lighting, railing, bar tops, and surface were specified together and built together. No retrofit, no afterthought, no junction box left visible.

The deck Dan had been picturing was the hour after dinner. Lamps just on, voices low, no one in a hurry to go in. The build delivered exactly that hour.

Most decks shut down when the sun goes down. Dan’s just starts.
